About the PTA

Mission Statement

The Mayo Parent Teacher Association exists to:

  • Promote the welfare of children and youth in home, school, community, and place of worship.
  • Raise the standards of home life.
  • Secure adequate laws for the care and protection of children and youth.
  • Bring into closer relation the home and the school , that parents and teachers may cooperate intelligently in the education of children and youth.
  • Develop between educators and the general public such united efforts as will secure for all the children and youth the highest advantages in physical, mental, social, and spiritual education.

A few of the things the Mayo PTA provides for our students and school are:

  • Family events, including an ice cream social, movie nights, claytime, and Shark’s games
  • Mayo school directories for each family
  • Teacher support such as providing overhead classroom projectors
  • Field trip transportation for each grade

Keep visiting the website for updates of upcoming events, meetings, family events, enrichments and more.

Box Tops

Mayo's Committee Contact: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

  • Our school is listed as Dr. Leroy E Mayo Elementary
  • Collection sheets are preferred, as they are a great help in the counting process (but we will take them anyway they come!)
  • Always include your name and grade on the sheets
  • Tape is the best way to stick the Box Tops onto the sheets. PLEASE DO NOT STAPLE!
  • You can make as many copies of a collection sheet as you like
  • Bonus Box Top coupons (these usually have a code or say something along the lines of “3 Bonus Box Tops” or “5 Bonus Box Tops”) should not be included on a collection sheet. Please send these in a ziplock bag with your name on it.

Collection sheets are available to download. It does not matter what sheet you use throughout the year.

Thank you for your support!

Destination Imagination

Mayo's Committee Contact: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

Destination Imagination (DI) is a non-profit, volunteer-led, cause-driven organization. Our purpose is to inspire and equip students to become the next generation of innovators and leaders. Annually, we offer seven new standards-based Challenges in STEM, Improv, Visual Arts, Service Learning, and Early Learning. Each Challenge is open-ended and enables student teams to learn and experience the creative process from imagination to innovation. Academic tournaments take place around the world where teams have the opportunity to present their solutions to trained appraisers. Students have fun and gain confidence in their ability to solve any challenge. In working to solve our Challenges, teams learn 21st century skills (creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, communication, citizenship and courage) to build on their unique strengths.

Up to seven members can be on a team, and students from kindergarten through university level participate. Each team needs an adult Team Manager. Team Managers direct students’ learning but do not directly help the team develop its solution to the DI Challenge. Team Managers are often faculty members or parents.
We hope to have a single team comprised of seven Mayo third- through fifth-graders.

There are six new competitive Challenges to choose from each year. Each of the Challenges is developed by a team of educators and industry experts who target a particular area of the curriculum and its related standards of content and performance. The areas of focus include: Technical, Scientific, Structural, Fine Arts, Improvisational and Service Learning. There is also a non-competitive Early Learning Challenge that allows participants to develop social and problem solving skills.
The Mayo team would choose a central challenge from among the six main challenges. Click here for more information about this year’s central challenges.

Each season takes place during the school year, culminating with Global Finals in May. Depending on the Challenge, teams typically spend two to four months developing and practicing their Challenge solutions.
It would be great to get the Mayo team started as early as possible this year.

The teams’ solutions are assessed at regional, state or national tournaments. While most schools run DI as an after school program, some school districts incorporate the program into their electives curriculum. Our tournaments provide the opportunity for participants to celebrate creativity with their peers and promote healthy competition. Every year, local volunteers help run 200 tournaments around the world.
The Mayo DI team would meet during non-school hours, most likely on weekends.

Teams in our program learn higher order thinking and improve in creative thinking, critical thinking and collaborative problem solving. Our participants learn and experience the creative process, develop new friendships and learn to work together.

Teams choose one of the seven Challenges. After creating and developing their solutions, they go to a local tournament. Top-scoring teams advance to their state or country tournament, also know as an Affiliate tournament. The top-tier teams from each Affiliate tournament have the opportunity to participate in Global Finals–the world’s largest celebration of creativity.

There is also an Instant Challenge component, in which teams must work together to devise and carry out a solution to a surprise challenge at the competition itself. The Instant Challenge requires team members to work together efficiently, using quick and creative thinking, time management, and teamwork—all skills that the team practices throughout the DI season.

Parent involvement is a key component of DI. Although parents cannot contribute their ideas or technical assistance to the team’s solution, there are many other great ways in which parents can help out. I would be happy to serve as the program coordinator for Mayo again this year and the team manager (unless someone else would like to be the team manager or a co-manager!). However, it would be great to have additional parents to help out at weekly meetings. We will also need a parent or other community member to volunteer as an “appraiser” for a DI tournament (which is a two-day commitment and a DI requirement in order for the Mayo team to enter into the competitive tournament).

Scrip Gift Card Fundraiser

Mayo's Committee Contact: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

Scrip is simply a word that means “substitute money” – in other words, Scrip is gift certificates from national and local retailers. They’re the same gift certificates that you buy at the store. Many popular retailers participate in our Scrip program including LL Bean, The Gap, Kohl’s, Dunkin Donuts, Panera, Red Robin and many, many others.

You’re probably asking yourself how these stores help us raise money. It’s simple—Scrip participating retailers agree to sell gift certificates to our organization at a discount. Member families like yours buy the certificates for full face value, you redeem them for full face value, and our school keeps the difference as revenue.

Example: Buy an LL Bean gift card for $100 and Mayo gets $18.00

The beauty of Scrip is that you put your regular household shopping dollars to work. You earn money for our school without spending a single additional penny. Just spend your regular shopping dollars with Scrip at the stores that participate in the Scrip program! And Scrip can be used for just about any household purchase including food, clothing, entertainment, gasoline and even dining out.

Gift Cards are perfect for teachers, coaches, mailman, bus driver, relatives and friends. Most people purchase gift cards during the holiday season and you can ask friends and family if they want to purchase them to support your child’s school.

How to Order

There are hundreds of retailers participating in the program. For a complete list, go to https://www.shopwithscrip.com. You can order online from the list!

Complete the order form and send in a check made payable to “Mayo PTA.”

The final deadline for orders is Thursday December 3rd.

Gift cards will be available for pick up on Thursday, December 17th before and after both holiday concerts and from 5-6pm.

We are unable to send orders via children’s backpacks.

Thank you for your support!
